CO2-ZERO

Carbon dioxide removal from The ATMOSPHERE AND permanent storage using enhanced weathering.

OUR STRATEGY

We at CO2-ZERO provide the full industrial chain from mining source olivine through to CCS from its reaction with CO2 in the atmosphere.

Our initial target is a system capable of 250,000 tons per annum (tpa) of CCS.

By 2030, our goal is to capture 1 million tpa of CO2.

WE ARE:
  • Low Cost
The driver of the process is a reaction that happens in nature anyway. Our inputs are limited to simple extraction, processing, logistics and spreading of olivine. Our realistic target is a cost of $50/ton for verified carbon offset when optimised.
  • Permanent
We capture carbon through enhanced weathering:
a permanent solution that binds carbon dioxide chemically to stable solid minerals.
  • Tested
Our technology has been tested in the field at sites in France and Türkiye. We plan to deploy our technology in Mauritania initially. Our industrial facility will include a training/research centre where we will optimise the various parameters adapted to Mauritania's climate and salt water characteristics.
  • Scalable
As the process is simple, it is easily scalable and is capable of CCS of 10's of millions of tonnes of CO2 pa. We are in a grow-grow trend where we can apply CCS solution to landowners and various industrial sectors.
  • Own Sources
CO2-ZERO cover the entire CCS chain from source to target. Our olivine comes - via our sister company - from the Seqi mine in Greenland, source of the world’s best and cleanest olivine. This enables us to minimize the carbon footprint of the entire process.
  • Eco Friendly

The Seqi olivine mine has been subject to 15 years of strict EU environmental controls. No permanent impact on flora or fauna has been identified. As our deployment facilities are controlled, no impacts on their surroundings are expected.

SCIENCE
Natures Way of CCS
CO2 has been removed from the naturally for billions of years. Olivine is a magnesium rich iron silicate which, through weathering and interaction with CO2 in seawater, captures and stores atmospheric CO2 naturally.
ACCELERATING CCS in the Laboratory
Laboratory research by our scientists and others provides a pathway for accelerating the process to remove CO2 from the atmosphere more rapidly.
Some published details are available here.
ACCELERATING CCS in the Field
We at CO2-ZERO have demonstrated the ability to accelerate greatly the natural CCS process. Our pilot test-work in Turkey and France proves that under specific conditions, we can use olivine in saltwater to capture 20% of its potential within 50 days.
UPSCALING
CO2-ZERO has executed a government level agreement that allows us to roll out our technology on an industrial scale. This West African location is ideal due to its warm climate and available seacoast.
THE FUTURE: safer CCS via Ni and Cr removal
We are actively investigating novel technology to remove Nickel and Chromium from olivine prior to its use in CCS. The recovered metal can be used by society. This both cleans the environment and provides additional income sources lowering the overall cost of CCS.
Scientific background: here and here.
  • 2t of CO2
captured by each 1 m3 of olivine
  • < 10%
Our carbon footprint is less than 10% of the carbon captured
  • < $50/ton
    Our carbon capture cost
Olivine is a magnesium-iron silicate and a primary component of the Earth’s upper mantle. When exposed to water, it alters relatively rapidly and naturally sequestrates CO2.
Each cubic metre of olivine can capture up to 2 tonnes of CO2.
We at CO2-ZERO are now optimising this process to be cost effective at industrial scales.
